Character Analysis of A Girl of the Limberlost by Gene Straton-Porter
The main character is Elnora Comstock. At the beginning of the book Elnora is a very homely girl. She wears rags because she has nothing else. The one thing that Elnora desires more than anything else is to go to school. During the time period of this book going to school was a privilege and not mandatory. There was also many fees to be able to go. Mrs. Comstock refuses to pay Elnora's fees. Mrs. Comstock is very mean to her daughter and very bitter since the death of her husband for which she blames Elnora. Elnora begins to catch moths for the Bird Lady to pay her way through school.
To be able to go to school Elnora has to become very independent. She makes her own money and manages her own time all without the help of her mother. She has to make sacrafices for the things she wants and she does so. One of things that she also wanted other than school was to play the violin which her mother also did not support. She had to play the violin in secret. Elnora had to grow up vey quickly because her mother, someone who should be there for her was not.
Through out the book Elnora's life changes drastically and arguably for the better. She becomes indepentdent and confident form the sacrifices she has made. She becomes sucessful young woman instead of the homely she was to start. Elnora eventually graduates at the top of her class from the school. She is greatly respected when she was orginally not.
